Chip Free Nail Polish

9:00 AM

Last week when I mentioned in my 10 things post about my nail routine, a lot of you were interested in it so had to make sure to get this post up! I totally understand the importance of a long lasting manicure as it is a pain in the butt to always be painting your nails.

I have pretty weak nails, like they are soft and bendy. I tend to think that my weak nails also contribute to how much my nails chip. Before I started this routine my nails would last maybe two days tops and then I'd have to deal with either having chipped nails or make time every few days to touch up or paint again.

So here is my routine that I discovered that has helped me have chip-free nails for at least a week.

The potions
1. Seche Soft Cuticle Softener Therapy, 2. OPI Natural Nail Strengthener, 3. OPI ChipSkip, 4. Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat

After trimming my nails and filing them here are my steps:
  1. Apply the Seche Soft Cuticle Softener Therapy on all nails. Rub it all over your cuticles and nails and then push back cuticles with an orange stick.
  2. I use the OPI Natural Nail Strengthener as a base coat and wait a minute for it to dry.
  3. Next is the OPI ChipSkip over the entire nails
  4. Apply two coats of nail polish. Let each coat dry for at least a few minutes before applying another coat.
  5. Make sure to let you nails dry a bit and then apply Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat. This stuff does really dry fast and it creates an extra layer over your nails to protect it.
  6. You're done!
I mainly use OPI nail polish which works wonderfully with this routine. I also use a lot of Zoya polish and this works just not as great, sometimes it will last the full week, sometimes it will chip after 3 days. The great thing about this routine though is that when it does chip, it's just a small tiny chip and never big chunks that are noticeable.

I love pink nail polish and am always buying different shades. I usually switch between pinks and purples but always seems to end up buying more and more pinks. Here are a my favorite pinks:

The OPI's are
  • I'm Indi-a Mood for Love
  • Feelin' Hot Hot Hot
  • Shorts Story
The Zoya's are:
  • Lo
  • Whitney
I buy a lot of my nail polish from 88 Beauty Supply or Head2Toe Beauty Store because the prices are insanely cheap! The shipping is kinda pricey but I figure you are saving a lot when you buy a lot of nail polish. All of my Zoya nail polish is from their website, Art of Beauty.

So, there you go! If any of you try this out, let me know how it works for you!

sidenote: I've been a bit MIA on the internets lately. I haven't been able to comment on all my favorite blogs or even interact on twitter which is something I love to do. My facebook updates are pretty non-existent but if you leave a comment on there I always try to reply back. Just so you know it's only because I am in my first full-blown busy wedding month as we are booked for weddings, engagements, or day after sessions for the next 5 weeks AND we are coming to fiscal year end at my full time job so I'm a bit in over my head. But no worries, I am the queen of organization and time management so will make some time to visit your blogs, facebook and twitter with you all when I can! I hope that you forgive me for being so late in my visits and responses. I am going to cut down my posts to about 3-4 a week until my crazy schedule dies down. I just want to say thank you all for reading and coming back to visit and leaving your comments and writing me emails, they all make my day!

And since there won't be a post tomorrow, maybe you could check out my latest posts on Elizabeth Anne Designs Living!

  1. Brilliant! I am trying to cut back on my mani/pedi expenses and will definitely try this the next time my fingers and toes are in need.

  2. I am obsessed with all things nail related and Seche Vite Fast Drying topcoat has been a miracle for me. I just wanted to give a word of caution to your readers that Seche is meant to be used over WET polish only. So do not wait too long before applying it or the polish will peel in sheets if completely drying. A little bit of drying time is good though to prevent dragging.

I also love your pink picks! I love pink polish [obvi lol] =)

  3. pinky - thank you for the advice on the Seche topcoat. very helpful!

  4. I work at a salon (a receptonist, but I know nails!) and you use everything that my salon swears by it!!!! My boss always says O.P.I is the best - it lasts longer than Essie and I agree!!

Great post! (I'm screaming for joy!)

  5. great post and i am an OPI fan. I will have to try that chip skip =)

  6. Those are lovely pinks! Thanks for the tips.. I'm always looking for a way for the salon manis to stay longer on the nails.

  7. I am trying this tonight!!! I keep hearing about Zoya, gonna get some...you've sealed the deal!

I miss you but I'm so glad you're busy!!

  8. great tips as i'm a nail girl too.

i'm going to have to try the chip skip. i love OPIs - you're a pisa work - a really great pink.

so glad your photography biz is thriving.

  9. NOTHING beats OPI!
Unfortunately its twice as expensive in the UK. So next week when I'm in the UK I'll be stocking up.

Nail Envy as a basecoat also works wonderfully :-)

  10. Love the names of the Zoya colors...how funny!

  11. I am a faithful OPI user. I used to use other brands but nothing compares to their quality. They are a little more expensive but totally worth it in my book. Now I have to find the OPI ChipSkip!

  12. I'm a huge fan of all Zoya polishes, I'm definitely going to check out these pink colors--are these opaque or slightly clear? I'm just trying to think if I can pull this off in a work place... thanks for the great tips, tiffany!!

  13. Thanks for this post because my nails are extremely soft and very very sensitive to chipping. Have to find this set now since I'm a fan of OPI.

  14. good luck with everything, so exciting for you guys!

I am going to have to try this...I spend a fortune having my nails done every other week!

  15. I thought you had to apply chip skip before your base coat? That's how i do it, and I get great results. I love OPI products also, they are the best. I think it's their brush that makes them good, because it's really wide and goes on easy.

  16. Hi there!!

I ran across your blog after googling "Louboutin Alti" and have to say, you are one very stylish lady!

    I will definitely come back!

Oh and you just made me want to go to Nordstrom sooo badly! =)

  17. Thanks for the nail tips, Tiffany! What would you suggest is the best nail polish remover? xoxo

  18. captivate me - the zoya colors are pretty opaque but I think that they are still work appropriate, the picture makes them look a bit brighter than they really are.

hanako - actually that is why I bought all these products because I used to get my nails done every other week and it just adds up! I think that this routine is a good alternative.

Rin - I think you are right, you put the chipskip on your clean nail but my nails are so weak that I like to put the nail strengther closest to my nail and then the chipskip over it. I haven't had a problem yet so I think it's okay either way.

vitaMinn style - thanks for stopping by! :)

Leah - I actually use the sponge remover which I know a lot of people don't care for, but it works really well for me and I don't have to deal with cotton balls. I use the Sally Hansen Kwik off.

  19. Ooh, just a bought a new OPI shade yesterday *Pink Flamenco*, hopefully I'll have time this weekend to try it out :)
Thanks for the post, Tiffany :) I'll definitely try the ChipSkip!

  20. Great tips! I love those OPI colors!

  21. as i may have mentioned in a previous comment, i have recently moved to seattle to live with my husband. you are clearly one of the most stylish women in the city! and no, not style-ish. keep up the inspiration!

  22. Another thing that helps weak nails is taking a little more calcium. I had weak nails for a long time but I started taking calcium supplements (cuz someone scared me into thinking that at my age I was already starting to lose bone density).. so I did it and I noticed that my nails and my hair were stronger and healthier. A couple of my friends tried it too and they love not having to buy nail strengtheners anymore!

  23. Great tutorial! Thanks so much! Ugh,I hate that my nail polish chips after a few days, I definitely need to invest in different potions & polishes so that I can keep the manicured look longer! Fabulous pinks!

  24. you are sure one busy gal. take care!

  25. Love pink nail laquers !

  26. good luck getting it all done! it's great to be so busy! :) can't wait to see all of the images from the weddings...

  27. Great post..had been waiting for it. Definitely gonna try it. And good luck with all the work that you have lined up.

  28. Hi :)
Great post! I also have week nails :( and I hate that! I go to the manicure and pedicure every single week (one or twice a week) and do a nail treatment.
Besides the treatment products I only wear Chanel nail polish (it's an addiction lol and I even take them to the manicure)! But yours look amazing! I love the pink ones :)
    Keep in touch
    Big kiss

  29. Great post. That's some good information. I'll have to mention this post to my sis. Hope you've had a good weekend. Cheers!

  30. thank you!! i wouldn't have guessed that you paint the no chip polish under the nail polish!

    but i'm gonna try it!

    thanks again :)
