Shopping with Me!

I’ve seen a few other bloggers share their “dressing room” shopping shots and always thought it was fun so when I went shopping earlier this week I took some iPhone snaps so that you all could come shopping with me and see what I try on! I do a lot of online shopping but nothing is like going to the store and actually trying it on for yourself. It’s also nice because it takes you away from seeing the tall skinny models that all online sites use so you don’t get so jaded when you try it on and it looks nothing like that on you. I know I have a lot of readers that are similar to my body type so thought that these “shopping with me” posts may help you if you are looking at the same things online but not sure if you want to buy it.

First off we went to J. Crew and I tried on several items. With J. Crew I go between wearing their XS/0 or wearing their petites sizes (it changes with each item) so it’s always a hit or miss in the sizing for me there. (But I always have to order petite stuff online, they never have it in the store which is frustrating, they really need to have some petite sizing in store). For reference in fit, everything that I’m wearing below is a XS or size 0.

I thought this top looked cute on the hanger and would be cute underneath a cardigan and a pair of shorts (my favorite default summer outfit) but when I tried it on I didn’t love it. The ruffles were just a bit too much on me.
The fit of this top is okay. I typically like the sides to fit a bit slimmer. Oh and it’s tucked in here so it’s actually much longer on me.

Palmera Ruffle Cami

J. Crew always gets me with the ruffles. I tried on this ruffled tank too mainly because it had a bit of bling on it. Ruffles + bling is just me! I typically don’t wear this color but was thinking that after I got a bit of tan it would look nice. I go through skirt phases where I either love or hate skirts. I’m currently in the love phase so I thought this one was cute and would be easy to wear with a lot of stuff.
The fit of this top was a bit better. It didn’t have much stretch in it which I don’t like however I think the overall fit could have been a bit slimmer. Not a big deal though, I’m sure nothing that a quick trip to my tailor couldn’t fix.

The fit of the skirt was fine and one of the things that I actually ended up liking.

Alice Ruffled Tank

Cotton Cavalry Skirt
I didn’t see the jean color online, so weird how they don’t have certain things online!

When I first saw this dress I thought “perfect Jamaica dress!” I could totally see myself throwing it over my swim suit and heading to the beach. However, I put it on and it was nothing but all sorts of yucky.
The fit on the bottom is fine but what the heck is going on with the top? I tried pulling it down so it didn’t poof up but it looked even weirder. The wrinkles didn’t look great and the black straps didn’t help either. They didn’t have this dress online (maybe it looked just as bad on the model as it did on me. Haha! just kidding 🙂 )

This would be the perfect summer blazer. Lightweight, great light blue color and cute lining in the sleeves.
This fits just slightly more baggy that I like it. The shoulders are always a hard fit on me and it was a little too big but only slight, something that I could probably deal with. I know that blazers like this don’t necessarily have to fit to your body but because of my size, I either have to go fitted or just overly baggy boyfriend style. Anything in between makes me look that much bigger. I would probably have my tailor take the sides in just a little. (Do you like what I got going on with my hair? It got messier and messier as the trying on went on. Don’t put your hair in a bun when trying on clothes. LOL!)

Chambray Schoolboy Blazer

Another mess of a dress that looked cuter on the hanger. Cupcake much?
Everything fits fine on this dress except the top is pretty stretched. The fabric is kind of thin too so I’d be concerned about what underwear to wear.

So, what did I end up getting? Nothing. I just didn’t love anything I tried on, except for the skirt but I wasn’t completely sold on it either.

The next stop was Nordstrom. My favorite clothing department in the store is Via C. I always go there first after the Salon Shoe department of course!

I have this thing for plaid button downs. I’m always looking for the perfect one but none really fit me right. That is until I picked up this Elizabeth and James plaid shirt and fell in love. It even fits in the bust which NEVER happens for button downs. You all know what I’m talking about “the gap” that always occurs in the 3rd-4th button down right across the bust. This shirt did not have it at all and even the fit throughout the body was perfect. I was sold the moment I put it on. This was a XS.
I love leggings, especially lately jean leggings and when I spotted these Vince denim leggings, I loved the quality of them (thick but not too much and a nice stretch) so I tried them on as well. These are a size 0 and fit perfectly too! I couldn’t have asked for a better outfit. It was meant to be. 🙂 only has it in this red color which is cute too.

Elizabeth and James Super Check Blouse

but shopbop has is in black like mine. On sale at both stores too!

Vince Jean Legging

So what did I walk out of Nordstrom with? Both of the items I tried on! They were too perfect not to 🙂 Oh and I went over to the Savvy department and found this gorgeous Winter Kate flowy cardigan and promptly bought it. I didn’t bother trying it on so no pictures but it’s super cute and will be perfect to wear over dresses and tee shirts this summer.

After shopping we worked up an appetite and I was in the mood for a fruity drink so hubs drove us to Ballard for some Puerto Rican food at La Isla. We love this restaurant. The servers are always super nice there and the food is YUM!
My mango lime daiquiri. It was just what I was craving!

We got some Empanadillas (Pernil and Camarones – pulled pork and shrimp). The pulled pork ones are the best! And you see that sauce in the little dish? SO good. It’s super garlicky, you’ll be tasting it for days but damn it’s amazing. I smothered my empanadilla in that stuff.

We ordered some more stuff that I didn’t take pictures of but I should’ve taken a picture of the dessert we got, a Tres Leches cake with ice cream and strawberries. Delish!

So there you go, a typical day (actually night, I like shopping at night better, no crowds to deal with!) of shopping with me. Pretty clothes and yummy food always make for a complete night for me and hubs!

I share a lot of fitting room posts hoping to spare fellow petites from ordering online and facing disappointment : ) Stuff on a 5 ft petite never looks the same as it does on the model! Very disappointing about some of those J.Crew items you tried on, and I agree – the really need to start offering some petite stuff in store!

Very fun! It's funny how some things look great on the hanger but terrible on. I always make that mistake and sometimes pass on things that actually look really good because I can't imagine them on. I have to try on more risky things.

    I like!

I'm disappointed you didn't like the first shirt and the blazer (love that blazer with the peach top and black pants – awesome! – Looked better on you than the model!). Bummer!

Nice you found that sweet E&J plaid shirt and the jeggings! And the WinterKate cardi-thing is sooo nice.

Sounds like a great lunch too! 😀

I'm loving the chambray blazer! I thought I bought enough chambray this spring, and had officially cut myself off – but now I'm going to have to pop online for the blazer! Perfect for work and weekends!

Never thought I'd say this but I love that plaid shirt! The last time I wore plaid was in the 90's but the black and white shirt looks chic and not grungy.

I totally agree with you regarding J Crew sizing. I did a fitting room post maybe about two weeks ago and everything had weird fits to it, was too boxy, strapless dresses falling off, etc.

That Nordstom dressing room looks awesome 🙂 I love it when I get a giant fitting room (because I love to take photos, and it can be annoying in a tiny fitting room).

I love this post — I totally try things on at J. Crew and go from love to "er… no." Not that the clothing is bad, it's one of my favorite stores, but some of the detail work doesn't always translate and I feel like one of those lizards with the collar frill. But then I try something that looks like a hot mess on the hanger and it looks great on a person. Like they always say, try before you buy!

I am equally on the E&J top! I ALWAYS have problems with those buttons too…

Also, those ruffled tops look great on you! I like how the ruffles look when they peek out from a cardigan or sweater too
