Ever since I made my glitter clutch, I’ve been looking around at everything that we have around the house that I can glitter. I told you I had a lot of glitter projects to share, I finally gathered them together to photograph!
First up are these little tea light holders that were totally boring on their own…
I put together a mixture of Mod Podge and glitter (same as the glitter clutch) but this time I dumped the mixture in the candleholder, swirled it around until it covered every area and then let it dry upside down for a day. Now, they are adorable and I keep one in the bathroom to hold my bobby pins which has made my life so much easier when doing my hair! Obviously the other thing I glittered was my iPhone case. I had a freebie case that I wasn’t using from when Apple was giving out free cases (because of the antenna issue). A plain black case instantly turned into something very girly and glam that I use all the time now! (I just used the mixture and dipped a foam brush into it and painted the mixture right onto the case. It needed about 3 coats.) (get the set of Mod Podge and brushes here)
*A note on the tea light holders, you can still use tea lights in them even with the glitter, just get the battery operated ones. They look just as cute and they even flicker a little! I have ones that I always keep in my candle holders.
I buy a ton of candles and always try to keep the jars once they are done being candles because they are great storage holders (I use a few to hold my makeup brushes). So instead of just cleaning it out and leaving it as is, I glittered it! I used a different glitter than the Martha Stewart for this one and it was a very fine, almost powdery glitter which I didn’t like as much. It took many more coats to get it to be that glittery. The Martha Stewart glitter is the perfect consistency and opaque which I think looks better. To clean out almost empty candle jars, boil a pot of water with about an inch or two of water (depending on how big your candle jar is and how much wax is left) and put the candle in the pot. It will melt the remaining wax in the jar and then you can dump the wax straight into the garbage and then wash the container out. Use a fork to scoop out the wick holders.
I filled it with my lipglosses and lip liners. Now my bathroom has a lot more glittery additions! And lastly, a jam jar converted into a gold pencil holder that makes my desk much more fun!
There are so many things you can do with Mod Podge and glitter. Just look around your house, I’m sure you’ll find as much stuff as I did!

March 4, 2012 at 5:29 pmI was wondering how well the glitter holds up, too–especially on your iPhone case.
tiffanystylish
March 6, 2012 at 1:41 amHi Jen! Everything is holding up great. The iPhone case is fine, but I like to switch up my cases a lot so the most that I've used it is probably a full week of daily use. I'm not sure how it will hold up for say daily use for a month but as far as I can tell, the mod podge and glitter are for sure stuck on and no glitter fall out.

June 13, 2012 at 11:58 amI've done this and the glitter sheds BIG time for me. Anyone know how to keep the glitter on? Is there a shellack I should be putting over it?
tiffanystylish
June 13, 2012 at 7:40 pmHi Alicia,
All my stuff that I've done months ago still has not shed. Did you have a pretty strong mixture of mod podge to glitter? Because when you pour the mixture, you want it to be a good amount of mod podge so that all the glitter specks are covered in the mod podge. That way all the glitter is coated and will hold better. I did not use a shellack or any coating. My clutch has some wear but only in the folds of where I have to open and close the bag. Other than that, the fall out is minimal.
Hope that helps!
Katie

June 18, 2012 at 4:54 amGreat idea! Another tip for getting remaining candle wax out is to put the container in the freezer over night, the wax should pop right out. I've done this a few times and it works really well.

July 13, 2012 at 5:39 amwould you put the glitter on the inside (the part your phone woul dbe against)or the outside of the case?
Amanda
July 16, 2012 at 12:54 amAnother way to get the last bit of wax out is to put the jar in the freezer (for an hour or so), then use a butter knife to break it up. It all falls right out.
Amanda
July 16, 2012 at 12:55 amYou can also put the candle jars in the freezer for an hour or so, and use a butter knife to break up the wax and it all falls right out.

July 24, 2012 at 5:33 amJust a tip for getting rid of the leftover wax in candle holders/jars/whatever: I just stick it into the kitchen sink at let hot water run on it. That will flush out the wax and clean your jar completely. It uses more water, but you don't run the risk of the glass container cracking from the heat of boiling water.

July 26, 2012 at 6:34 pmWhat mixture of mod podge vs glitter did you use? Equal parts? I am going to glitter my phone case! Planning to mix an Onyx glitter with a dark turquoise! This is so awesome thank you!
tiffanystylish
July 30, 2012 at 12:23 am2 parts glitter to 1 part mod podge worked for me. that sounds so pretty!

July 28, 2012 at 6:41 pmAnother easy way to clean out candle jars is to stick it in the freezer for 30+ minutes. Then all the wax just snaps out!

December 15, 2012 at 8:37 pmThe brush containers are fine and shouldn't make much of a mess but I feel like the phone case would leave traces of glitter everywhereeeeee. That's what would keep me from making it. 🙁 Does anyone know what would be good to use as a good topcoat so it doesn't tranfer glitter onto everything??
tiffanystylish
December 17, 2012 at 4:59 amI made this awhile ago but the iPhone was completely fine and did not leave traces of glitter. If you look at my clutch that I did previously (I linked to it in the post) it's the same and does not have any fall out.
I think people have used some top coat spray but if you do a good enough mixture of mod podge to glitter, the mod podge acts as the glue to the pieces of glitter and it just doesn't fall off. I've done this technique to several things, not just jars and have not had a problem. Hopefully it works for you too!
Grace Hoffman
December 16, 2012 at 9:18 pmGreat idea! So the glitter phone case doesnt leak glitter? I made one a while back not using this technique and whenever I use it my hands end up getting covered with glitter, any suggestions on how to fix this?
tiffanystylish
December 17, 2012 at 5:01 amI think you just have to make sure that your mod podge and glitter is fully mixed together. Also, make sure each coat is fully dry in between each application. I still have the iPhone case and it still looks exactly the same as it did when I made it almost a year ago! No glitter fall out and it doesn't get on my hands.
Tristan Lerner
January 3, 2013 at 10:05 pmDoes it matter what kind of phone case is used, like rubber case, hard case, shiny case, etc or will the glitter mixture stick to any surface? Thanks a lot! I can't wait to try this.
tiffanystylish
January 5, 2013 at 2:40 pmI used a hard plastic case which I think is probably best but since mod podge can basically stick to almost anything you should be pretty safe with any material. It just might be harder to get a smooth even surface with something like rubber. Hope that helps!
Lucy De Rouge
January 10, 2013 at 8:22 amThis is so cool! I know this seems a stupid question but how long has all the glitter lasted on the case – just because I actually purchased one online and it was terrible and all the glitter fell off!

January 10, 2013 at 9:45 pmMy case looks exactly the same but I don't use it for long periods of time. I switch my phone cases out almost every 2 weeks. (I have a lot of cases!) 🙂 I really didn't have any problems with glitter falling off of mine.
Zoe_loves_you
January 10, 2013 at 1:11 pmI definitely am one that has a glitter addiction ever since I took normal glass ornaments and glittered the inside and did the same thing for mason jars to make center pieces! We found that when you are doing deep concave surfaces like jars or ornaments you can use pledge floor wax and roll it around, dump it out and then apply glitter and it sticks! It's a much cheaper option than modgepodge which you can then save to make cute phone cases or other projects!
tiffanystylish

January 14, 2013 at 9:56 pmThanks so much for posting this. I tried it out on a little glass jar I wanted to sit on my desk and hold paperclips. It turned out great! I liked it so much, now I'm glittering my tape dispenser to match. 🙂

January 19, 2013 at 3:48 amCute idea! I love Modge Podge. To get out a little wax from jars. I do this and it works everytime!!
Run your tap water as hot as you can get it and fill up the rest of the candle jar then pour a squirt of liquid detergent on it and let it set overnight. When it cools, it seperates from the glass and you can pop it right out 🙂
Ariella Lola
February 9, 2013 at 2:54 pmAnd it does leave glitter everywhere? how did you do that? just the modge podge keeps it together? cool!

June 17, 2013 at 2:12 amWhen my candles are almost dead, i put them into the freezer to get the wax out. After a few days in there. the wax usually pops right out in one piece. But i love the idea..I might have to glitter my otter box this summer!! 🙂
