San Diego is known for its extensive craft beer scene so happy hours are aplenty in any neighborhood. But since most of the bar scene is downtown, the beachy areas have slightly less options. That said, Union Kitchen & Tap along the highway coast 101 in Encinitas is the perfect happy hour option for north-county residents. I recommend stopping by after a beach day!
This restaurant offers their version of happy hour from 3-6pm on Mondays-Fridays (and all night Mondays!). Their deals are: $5 Draft Beers, $6 Wines, $2 off Cocktails, and $10 Flatbreads in addition to a smaller version of their dinner menu.
For drinks, we ordered the Hopocalypse (blood orange IPA) and the Agatha (vodka watermelon cocktail). Union Kitchen & Tap has a large rotating menu of local beers and seasonal cocktails so your party is guaranteed to find an option for everyone.
Union Kitchen & Tap is not just a bar. It’s a full-service restaurant with an expansive dining space. We were starved after a day out hiking along the beach so we ordered a little overzealously. We tried the Prosciutto Flatbread ($10 for happy hour!), Artisan Cheese Board, Watermelon Salad, and ABLT. The portions and toppings were very generous and we especially liked how fresh the greens were (as to be expected from So-Cal produce).
For an actual happy hour, I recommend the Artisan Cheese Board. It offered a really great selection of flavors with three types of cheeses, spreads and veggies that we reached for with our drinks in hand. The flatbreads are also a good option to share during happy hour.
One of the nicest things about Union Kitchen & Tap is the location. It’s right along a busy street of shops and restaurants but right behind the main street are smaller residential ones where you can easily find free parking. It’s definitely a nice stop near Cardiff and Encinitas for your next happy hour fix.
