The Top Newborn Baby Gear Essentials

freshly picked diaper bag review

After having my first and having bought so much gear, there were things that I definitely knew I wanted to use for our new little one.  Some of these items I haven’t used yet as they weren’t even invented when I had my first daughter. However, everything here I’ve either used previously or researched and have found that they got the highest ratings amongst moms of newborns.

Here’s my ultimate list of the top newborn baby gear essentials!

The best baby products sleep and lounging

As parents, I think we think about our child’s sleep WAY too much.  We worry about their sleep all the time, so a lot of products are focused on sleep. Although this list is long, most of these products helped me out a lot with my first daughter who was a great sleeper and I’m crossing my fingers for another good sleeper with this new little one!

Rock n Play

We used this with my daughter and it worked so well that I’m planning on using it again.  We used it when she was a newborn so that I could keep her right by my bed and it was very easy for me to get her in and out.  She also slept very well in it.

The only thing that I had to do was to make sure that I had to switch her head position so she didn’t get a flat head on one side of her head.

Aden & Anais Swaddles and blankets

Our favorite brand for swaddles and blankets. For our first, we had so many people buy us swaddles and blankets so we went through so many brands.  I eventually got rid of almost all of them and just exclusively used Aden & Anais!

The swaddles are easy to actually swaddle with as a newborn, as my daughter grew older, she started to use the swaddles as a lovey and even now she still sleeps and naps with one.  She literally can not fall asleep without having one next to her!

Dockatot

I don’t think these were around when I had my first but once I got pregnant and discovered the Dockatot, I knew I had to have it. The dockatot is a baby lounger that makes it so easy to have a spot just for the baby without worry about them rolling off. It’s great for co-sleeping and is easy to transport so you can carry it from room to room to always make sure you have a great spot for the baby to rest.

You can also use it for tummy time and play time if you get the toy arch as well.  I love all the pretty designs and patterns for the covers and appreciate that it’s something that can go with the decor in your home and not just another baby item.

They have two sizes and the larger size is also great for toddlers when you are ready to transition them from the crib to toddler bed!

Halo Swaddle

I loved this swaddle and it’s different than the Aden & Anais ones that I mentioned above because this one doesn’t require special folding skills.  You just pop the baby into it and then velcro her in.  So easy!  And very effective.

I used this as my daughter got older as it was nice not to have to deal with a blanket kind of swaddle (which is so much easier to do with newborns) and also that once she got to the stage of wanting her arms our of the swaddle, it was easy to transition with the Halo Swaddle.

MamaRoo

My sister had one of these and I borrowed it for my daughter when I went to visit her and my daughter really loved it! I never ended up getting one for her but I knew for this baby that I really wanted one.  I love that it’s a comfy place to put the baby down in and that it has several variations of rocking motions and speeds.

Beautyrest Crib Mattress

I really wanted a quality mattress that would keep the baby well rested and comfortable.  I found that this one got really great ratings so I’m looking forward to testing it out!

Halo Bassinest

My first daughter stayed in our room for the first 6 months.  First we had her in the rock n play and then moved her to a co-sleeper.  I’m really excited to try out this bassinet next to our bed to see how we like it compared to the rock n play.

It swivels easily so you’ll be able to keep it bedside but also get in and out of bed yourself easily and it even has vibrations, plays lullabies and soothing sounds to help the baby sleep!  Our first co-sleeper definitely did not have any of these high tech functions so I love these added features.

Newborn baby products to make mom’s lives easier

There are products that are great for babies and there are products that moms need simply because they make life easier as a new mom!

Aden & Anais Burpy Bib

Since it’s a bib you can certainly use it on the baby but I tend to use it as a burp cloth to throw over my shoulder or to catch any other spit up that babies inevitebly do after each feeding.  I love the large size of it, how soft it is and as with the swaddles, they get softer each time you wash them.

Freshly Picked Diaper Bag

Diaper bags have come a long way since I had my first.  It was tough for me to find a chic diaper bag that didn’t cost crazy amounts of money so I ended up using a regular tote bag with a diaper organizer insert.  It worked well back then but I’m so happy to have found quite a few better looking designs!

This Freshly Picked Diaper Bag is made of really high quality faux leather and I love how it stays structured even without stuff in it.  It’s got a ton of pockets, super easy to get into.  I also love that you can wear it as a crossbody or a shoulder bag!

Freshly Picked Moccasins

You may think it’s weird that shoes are on here as a baby “essential” but I put them on here because I don’t like to take my baby out barefoot.  Especially since I’m due in October so she will be coming into a cold and rainy fall and winter season.  We definitely love onesies that will cover their feet but sometimes you do just need socks/shoes and these are the best ones out there.

I learned with my first baby that babies tend to kick off socks really easily, so I keep my babies feet warm with these moccasins.  Not only are they cute, they are easy to put on and they stay on her feet!

Willow Pump

This is something that I just discovered this year and I’m SO excited to try it out.  It’s a breast pump that you can stick in your bra and not be attached to a machine! I also love that it’s got an app so you can see how much you pumped, pumping time, etc…

I will have a full review once I’ve used it but I’m so excited to try it out as I didn’t mind pumping but I hated being attached to the bag and having to wear the pumping bra.  This allows me to be mobile and be able to pump wherever and whenever I need!

Nose Frida

This is the best tool during cold and flu season as it helps you get all the snot out of your baby’s nose.  You put the little tube in your baby’s nostril and then you have another end that you suck it all up. But don’t worry the snot never makes it to you!  Talk to any parent and I’m sure they will tell you how gross this product seems but once you use it, you are so thankful!  You don’t realize how much you will need to get snot out of your baby’s nose. For toddlers, you will be using it even more!

I ended up getting this set of ALL of fridababy’s products since I love their brand so much that I had to try their other products!

Dr. Browns Bottles

Another great product that we used with our first.  There are a lot of parts to wash but I liked that it really helped to control the flow of the milk and that you could change the speed of the flow as the baby grew older and is able to drink a bit faster.  This time around, we went with the options bottle which gives you the choice of using the vent system or not which will be great once she’s old enough to handle it.

I mostly nursed my daughter but on the times that we did do bottle feeding, these were great transition between breast and bottle and she never got fussy with the bottle.
